After we had been in Jordan a few weeks, we went out into the desert to do a live-fire and familiarization exercise.

Firing our M4s and M249s. The M4 carbine replaced the M16 rifle. It is basically a lighter, shorter, and more reliable version of the M16; both fire 5.56mm ammo. The M249 "SAW" (squad automatic weapon) fires 5.56mm rounds from a belt; it can also fire the same magazines as an M4 in a pinch, although it is quite a bit less reliable this way.

Here I'm getting ready to fire the MK-19. Officers don't usually get to fire the big guns very often, so this was a memorable experience for me!

Several of us took "field trips" to various historical sites in Jordan. This is near the top of Mount Nebo, where Moses was shown the Promised Land (Deu 32:49), and where he also died and was buried. No one knows exactly where he was buried.

This is where Moses looked out and saw the Promised Land. Although there is usually fog in the valley that limits visibility, a sign points out the directions and distances to the major cities nearby.
After Mount Nebo, we continued on to Jarash, a centuries-old city which has been rather well preserved.

To demonstrate the accoustics in the coliseum, our tour guide dropped a coin onto the floor while standing in the center of the main stage. We could hear it clearly, even from the very top.
