The M4 carbine replaced the M16 rifle. It is basically a lighter, shorter, and more reliable version of the M16; both fire 5.56mm ammo. The M249 "SAW" (squad automatic weapon) fires 5.56mm rounds from a belt; it can also fire the same magazines as an M4 in a pinch, although it is quite a bit less reliable this way.
